The General Guidelines for HauteSpot Product Selection
Pick a frequency
- If you have line of sight, meaning direct, unobstructed visability from your remote stations to your master AP, then use 5GHz for all distances up to 20km.
- If you have a few trees, a wood only building, a few wires, a fence, or other low attenuation obstructions with a distance of less than 2km, then 2.4GHz is your best choice.
- If you have to go over hills, through dense trees or over buildings, then 900MHz is your best choice.
- Bear in mind that the lower the frequency, the more prone to interference your network will be, the fewer useable channels you have available, and the more difficult it will be to determine the source of interference. Always use the highest frequency possible for your application.
Pick an antenna
Use the narrowest antenna horizontal beam width (azimuth) that will cover the link you need. For HauteSpot equipment, we generally recommend using a sector antenna on the master/AP:
- 120 degree sector
- 90 degree sector
- Omni Direction (360 degree)
On remote station equipment we generally recommend using panel antennas for links up to 8km and then parabolic dish/grid antennas for longer links up to 20km:
- 8-30 degree panel antenna
The narrower the horizontal beamwidth, the higher the gain. Also, narrow beam antennas receive less noise, are more difficult to intercept, and allow you to reuse frequencies
Then use polarity variation to overcome interference and allow channel reuse. This means using horizontal polarity for one section and vertical polarity for another. Sector antennas can be ordered in either horizontal or vertical polarity. For mobile applications you should use a multi-polarized or circular polarity antenna on the remote vehicle and a standard sector antenna on your master/AP
Select your Master/AP
You will need to decide if your master/AP is going to be an outdoor unit like the HR-WRAPSXC, a full duplex outdoor unit like the HR-WRAPDXC (which can also be used as a repeater), or an indoor unit like the HR-WRAPSXCi or HR-WRAPDXCi. Indoor units can be mounted inside your own NEMA enclosure. HauteSpot can provide you with the needed cables to wire your indoor unit in your own enclosure.
Select your Remote Station
HauteSpot Networks provides you with several options for remote stations. We offer a very cost effective, "all-in-one" solution with our HR-WRAPSTA products. These simple to install products combine a panel antenna with a router in a single integrated part. The UV resistant plastic enclosure is weather resistant and attractive. The HR-WRAPSTA is good for a single, megapixel camera or up to three standard resolution cameras and can also be used for lower capacity point to point links.
The HR-WRAPLX products are well suited for more demanding applications, where two megapixel cameras or four standard resolution cameras are ganged at one drop location. The NEMA IP6/7 rated enclosure is rugged and can survive the harshest environments. The HR-WRAPLX gives you the flexibility to choose the right antenna for your application and mount the antenna in the best position, regardless of where you mount the router. (Shorter distance is better).
For higher capacity drop locations where 5 to 8 megapixel cameras are to be located, or where throughput demands are high, the HR-WRAPSXC can be used.
Finally, where latency sensitive, extreme performance is required, the HR-WRAPDXC can be used in full duplex mode, allowing for near wire performance of multi-sensor megapixel cameras or for building links.
Protect Your Equipment
Where lightning or other environmental or power delivery problems may exist, you should install gas vapor discharge lightning arrestors on your RF pigtails as well as surge supressors on your PoE cables. Be prepared to waterproof your connectors using rubber electrical compound and/or splicing tape. Your cameras and routers should be put on a UPS system in order to provide operation in the event of power loss.
Power System
All HauteSpot routers operate on 11-27VDC. We provide a passive mid span Power Over Ethernet injector and 90-240VAC to 18VDC power supply with all outdoor systems (PoE injector is not provided with indoor units). You should make sure that your installation design includes appropriate power for our routers. This is especially important when mounting with camera enclosures that have heater/blowers operating at 24VAC or mounting on light poles that only have 240VAC. We can assist you in designing appropriate solutions for these cases.
Ethernet Switching
In order to connect your camera to a HauteSpot Router you will either need to cross connect the camera using an Ethernet cross over cable, which is provided with every HauteSpot system, or if you are using multiple cameras at a drop, you will need a switch.
HauteSpot Networks offers our HR-WRAPSXC3E and HR-WRAPDXC3E models that include a 3 port Ethernet switch. This eliminates the need for a separate switch device.
Putting it all together
In order to make all of this easier for you, HauteSpot Networks offers kits which combine routers, antennas, cables, and power protection in one, easy to order SKU. For BASE station master units we have kits in a variety of frequencies and with antennas that will meet almost every need. For STATION remote units, we have directional systems that will work with the BASE station master units.

We put the HauteSpot microNVR and Global Emergency Resources eWRAP to the test. Driving 700 miles from Meridian, Mississippi to Augusta, Georgia, we put a Mobotix megapixel camera attached to a microNVR and eWRAP in a moving van. The microNVR recorded at full frame rate and resolution all of the video from the camera. It also transcoded and pushed video out over the eWRAP using 3G EvDO wireless.
